Last year I took a cue from Chris Brogan and opted to select three words to serve as guide posts for 2011. Unlike New Year’s resolution – which are often abandoned – selecting three words seems to work better for me.
There are other ways to kick of the New Year and to set objectives for the coming year. A good friend of mine likes to have a phrase for the year. A few years ago he chose “cleaning up the yard” and used that year to streamline and focus his work and life.
I opted to repeat the practice I started at the start of 2011 and selected three words for this new year.
My Three Words for 2012
My three words this year are:
+ SUSTAINABLE: I will make a conscious effort to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. I am constantly juggling to many things and it is no longer sustainable. 2012 will be there year I focus my time and energy on the things that matter most. It’s starts with family – specifically my relationship with my wife and my kids. I will continue to pursue the things I am passionate about, but will be more intentional. Whether it’s music, hosting a podcast or being a professional fundraiser, it must all be sustainable and bring joy to my life and not interfere with my primary role of being a husband and a father.
+ KINDNESS: My wife Heather is the kindest person I know. I need to emulate her and intentionally practice kindness. I will focus on being kinder to those around me and kinder to myself. I will work hard to break the shackles of low self-esteem and be kinder with myself. In my daily interactions with family, friends, co-workers and strangers … I will choose and choose kindness.
“I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” ~ Ettiene De Grellet
+ HEALTH: I am bringing this word back in 2012. Last year was a turning point for me. I shed in excess of 50 pounds, ran two half-marathons and have never felt better. Having a healthier lifestyle has never be more important and, in the spirit of “sustainability”, it must remain a focus area for me in the year. I will complete two half marathons (April & October); one full marathon (May); exercise consistently (3-4 times a week). I will spend time in nature and get on my bike more consistently. Whenever possible, I will do this with the company of my beautiful and amazing wife and children.
Sustainable, Kindness, Health – my three words for 2012!
As was the case last year, these words are not meant to serve as goals but as guideposts in the journey that will be 2012. I am excited about the coming year and wholeheartedly believe that I will finish 2012 a healthier and kinder person!
Note: We are delighted to announce that Chris Brogan – the person who introduced this concept of three words to me – will be our guest on episode #85 of The Conversation Hub. It will be available on Tuesday, January 24, 2012!
