Today is National Day of Listening!
I am an avid National Public Radio listener. Today, like every other day, I spent my travel time in the car listening to NPR. What made today more special was the various interviews that were shared as part of the National Day of Listening. Every interview I heard transported me into the lives of the people involved in the conversation.
Sons interviewing their mothers.
Daughters interviewing their fathers.
Soldiers sharing their story with a loved one.
Friends reminiscing about a school teacher.
As I listened to the various conversations today it reaffirmed something that I have come to believe in very strongly:
Through conversation, friendships are formed;
Through conversation, knowledge is shared; and,
Through conversation, life happens and finds meaning.
I hope you’ll take a few moments today and each day moving forward, to engage in a meaningful conversation with a loved one. Make every day a National Day of Listening!
About The National Day of Listening
The National Day of Listening is a new national holiday started by StoryCorps in 2008. On the day after Thanksgiving, StoryCorps asks all Americans to take an hour to record an interview with a loved one, using recording equipment that is readily available in most homes, such as computers, iPhones, and tape recorders, along with StoryCorps’ free Do-It-Yourself Instruction Guide.
Celebrating the National Day of Listening provides a noncommercial alternative to “Black Friday” shopping sprees. Tens of thousands of Americans have participated in the National Day of Listening, and educators and community organizations have incorporated StoryCorps’ interviewing techniques into their programs.
