A Great Call To Action

Happy Independence Day!

Today is always a special day for every American. It’s a day when families come together; a day made for celebration; a day when we honor the story that is America.

The celebrations will go on all day!  We’ll stand and honor those who serve and have served; we’ll sing our anthem with pride and our flag will be the centerpiece to everything we do! We’ll close the day with fireworks and give the impression that we are indeed one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all!

Tomorrow, we’ll go back to our normal ways. We are a nation divided and that’s why I was so moved by the call to action issued by Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks.  Here’s an excerpt of his letter to all of us:

On Independence Day, our country celebrates the promise of America.

It’s a day to remember that the principles that bind us together vastly outweigh what keeps us apart. The freedom to dream and the opportunity to create a better life – not just for ourselves, but for each other – has always defined our great nation.

I am a product of that American Dream. As a kid who grew up in public housing, went on to get an education at a state university and build a business, I am grateful for what this country has made possible for me.

Together, we can set a new tone in America. We hope you agree that doing so is a powerful way to celebrate our nation’s birthday.

In 2012, America needs to win the election more than either party does. It is time now to join together as Americans. It is time, whatever our differences, for us to strive and succeed as one nation – indivisible.

I encourage you to read the complete letter by visiting this link (click here) and consider what you can do to spark a more positive conversation in your neighborhood and community.

I am Canadian but I’ve made my home in this great land for more than twelve years now.  I love the fact that all things are possible here. I love the fact that anyone who is willing to work hard can succeed here.

Let’s live up to the promise that is America. Let’s take up the call to action issued by Howard Schultz and join together in a new conversation.  If we do that, I am convinced that we’ll quickly realize that through conversation, life happens and finds meaning.

Be well, make it a great day and Happy Independence Day!
