When I first heard this story, my first thought was this – how can an organization committed to empowering young girls act in a way that is so contradictory to what they are trying to achieve.
Emma Vermaak, our guest this week, just wanted to make a difference using the Girl Scouts’ “I Care” program. Since the Girl Scouts organization and the leadership of her local troop aren’t collaborating, she thought she’d do it herself.
I encourage you to check out www.treats2troops.org and make a donation!
One more request: help me reach out to Emma’s favorite band One Direction with a Tweet, and encourage them to support her efforts to bring a “taste of home” to our troops. Use the Hashtag #HelpEmma!
About Emma Vermaak
Emma Vermaak is a pretty typical 11-year-old girl. She likes One Direction, talking to her friends and playing soccer. She is an Honor Student, a sister and a wonderful daughter. Like many young girls, she joined the Girl Scouts. Not for the greater good of mankind, but because her little friend’s mom had created a new troop.
The focal point of the year for a Girl Scout is Cookie Season. A lesser known aspect of cookie sales is their I CARE program which sends cookies to the troops. The girls are encouraged to ask people if they would like to donate a box of cookies to the troops. Emma was dismayed when she noticed that almost no one donated boxes when she was selling door to door. Some would donate during cookie booths, but very few. Just a small fraction of what was sold to customers.
She wanted to do something it and when the opportunity presented itself, she took it. But then, everything went wrong. You can read the story here at The Girl Scouts Story and the follow-up here at The Girl Scout Cookie Saga Update – From Bad to Good.

I encourage to visit Treats 2 Troops and consider making a donation to help Emma bring a “Taste of Home to our Troops Abroad.”
